How Long is Spravato Treatment?

Spravato® is a prescription nasal spray designed to help individuals with treatment-resistant depression—a form of depression that hasn’t responded to traditional antidepressants. It works differently than most medications, targeting the brain in a new way to help relieve symptoms when other treatments haven’t been effective.

In some cases, Spravato may be used alongside other therapies, including oral antidepressants and psychotherapy, for a more comprehensive approach to care.

At Precise Mind, our experienced team can help you explore whether Spravato is right for you. We’re here to answer your questions—whether you’re wondering how Spravato works, what to expect during treatment, or how long a typical course lasts.

Your path to feeling better starts with the right information and support. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.

How Does Spravato Work?

Spravato regulates the amount of glutamate in the brain, a neurotransmitter that helps you manage your mood. If glutamate levels are unbalanced, it may contribute to depression symptoms. Spravato restores balance to the brain’s glutamate system by blocking the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors.

Your provider administers the remedy during your appointment, monitors your response, and can help with any side effects you may experience. You may be observed for up to two hours after. Before your session, your provider explains how long your Spravato medication plan and observation may take, allowing you to plan your day accordingly.

How Long Is the Care Plan?

Spravato therapy includes two phases, each with its own timeline. Our team discusses the length of each phase with you before your first session.

Initial Phase

In the first phase, you typically receive two weekly sessions, each lasting about two hours. During this time, your body adjusts to the medication, and your provider monitors your response.

Spravato’s initial phase lasts around four weeks. You may notice your depression symptoms start to lessen during this time.

Maintenance Phase

During the maintenance phase, the treatment frequency decreases, ranging anywhere from once each week to once a month, depending on your specific needs and response. Sessions typically last about two hours. The maintenance phase of Spravato usually lasts several months. The goal is to continue to support the positive effects of the medication and prevent symptoms from returning, so you can continue to enjoy your daily life without the interference of depression symptoms.

If you are unsure whether you can commit to the treatment schedule, we can help you explore your options and plan accordingly.
